Dubai jails two Britons over drugs
---
Two British visitors to the bustling Persian Gulf emirate of Dubai have
been sentenced to four years in jail for possessing drugs.
A Dubai court on Sunday sentenced the pair to four years each for
"possessing various amounts of hashish for personal consumption," the
English-language Gulf News reported.
They will be deported after serving their sentences.
One of the two, aged 22, was arrested at Dubai airport on June 7. The
other, aged 27, was also arrested at the airport after flying in from
Afghanistan on June 22.
The UAE imposes tough penalties for all drug-related offenses - four
years is the usual sentence for possession while trafficking carries the
death penalty.
The Western-oriented emirate of Dubai, one of seven that make up the
United Arab Emirates, is highly popular with Britons, one million of
whom visited the sunny city state in 2005. Some 100,000 British
nationals live in Dubai, and 20,000 more reside in other parts of the UAE.
