Malaysia: Indonesian labourer to hang for trafficking
---
JOHOR BARU: An Indonesian labourer was sentenced to death by the High
Court here Wednesday for drug trafficking.
Yusri Pialmi, in his 30s, was found guilty of trafficking 1.85kg of
cannabis at Jalan Saujana Utama, Taman Saujana, here at 11pm on Feb 25,
2005.
High Court Justice Datuk Syed Ahmad Helmy Syed Ahmad reached his
decision after finding the defence had failed to prove the accused was
innocent beyond a shadow of a doubt.
"After reviewing the facts of the case, I find him guilty of drug
trafficking.
"I have no choice but to render the sentence of death by hanging," he
said, adding that both the charge and sentence were under Section 39 (B)
of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Jean Sharmilla said the prosecution was
confident of winning because the evidence against the accused was very
incriminating.
"He was holding bags full of drugs when he was arrested two years ago.
"Their defence was very weak as they relied on mere denial," she said.
The accused, dressed in a white T-shirt and blue jeans, appeared calm as
the decision was read.
No family members were present and it is learned that the accused has
prior police records for violating his work visa.
He was represented by defence council Shaik Salim.
