Italy: Drugs Test on Politicians, Two plea-Bargaining
---
The case of the television programme 'Le Iene' in October 2006 on a
drug-test on 50 MP's, which was never broadcast, has come to a
conclusion after five months and ten days, before the investigating
judge of Rome, Maria Antonietta Ciriaco. The accused, for whom Public
Prosecutor Salvatore Vitello asked the trial for violation of the
privacy laws, are the maker of the programme, Davide Parenti, and 'iena'
Matteo Viviani. The programme was accused of taking sweat samples of
members of Parliament and using them to test for drugs. Sixteen out of
the 50 MP's tested positive, 12 for cannabis, 4 for cocaine. The Privacy
Watchdog stopped the show from being broadcast, ordering "a block of the
use of personal data", due to "the illegal collection of data of a
sensitive nature since related to health". Vitello closed the case and
revealed that the technique used by the 'Iene' leads to reliable results
close to the truth.
