India: 10 years RI for possessing cannabis
---
Shimla, Apr 28: The Himachal Pradesh High Court has upheld the local
court's decision of sentencing a person, possessing cannabis, to ten
years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs one lakh.
A division bench of Justices Surjit Singh and Dev Darshan Sood, upheld
the conviction but reduced the sentence awarded in default of payment of
fine from earlier two years rigorous imprisonment to six months.
The court convicted the applicant, who was arrested from the forest area
adjoining Shilaru village of Kullu district, under Section 20 of the
Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act for possessing eleven kg
of cannabis.
The applicant, in his application, had prayed that there were several
contradictions in the prosecution's theory and that he was called to the
police station and implicated in a false case.
