Ghana: Police Arrest Chief
---
The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested the Chief of Kulmanga,
Yahaya Mahama, for cultivating a plant suspected to be Indian hemp in
his garden.
The chief was arrested upon a tip-off in his community near the Tamale
airport in the Savelugu-Nanton district of the Northern region.
Briefing the media on the matter, the Northern Regional Crime Officer,
Superintendent Ebenezer E. Lartey said when the police received the
report, they visited the scene and saw the plant growing among other
plants in the garden.
They monitored the growth of the plant and found out later that it had
been uprooted and dried.
Upon interrogation, it was uncovered that it belonged to the chief and
he was subsequently arrested. He has since been remanded into prison
custody after being put before the Tamale District Magistrate Court and
would reappear on October 31, 2007.
Meanwhile, samples of the plant have been sent to the Criminal
Investigations Department (CID) Laboratory in Accra for analyses.
The Crime Officer therefore called on all concerned citizens to
volunteer information that would help the police clamp down on drug
barons in the region, and warned those engaged in the cultivation of
Indian Hemp that when they are arrested, the law might not deal
leniently with them especially at a time when drug peddling was high in
the country.
