UK: Another huge cannabis factory found
---
A substantial cannabis factory has been found in a house in a
Northamptonshire village.
The property, in Charwelton, is the second cannabis factory that has
been disrupted in the Daventry area in the past few days.
On Friday, police announced the discovery of a similar production
facility in the Stour area of the town, while yet another factory was
found in a house in Abington Avenue, Northampton, on Saturday.
There is at the moment no evidence to suggest a connection between the
two finds.
Acting on information from members of the public, officers from Daventry
Crime Investigation Unit went to the house in Church Street, Charwelton,
yesterday afternoon.
So far, only the downstairs of the large property has been searched but
police have already found around 500 cannabis plants and the associated
hydroponics equipment.
A 35-year-old man has been arrested in connection with being concerned
with the cultivation of cannabis and he has been taken into custody in
Northampton. He was being interviewed again
today.
Police are still actively seeking a second man in connection with the find.
The upstairs of the property will be searched today and, at the moment,
police are expecting to find a similar number of plants. It is possible
that the 500 plants already found could be worth £150,000-£200,000 every
10 weeks.
The property was due to be made safe this morning before forensic
investigators begin to examine the scene.
Detective Inspector Alan McSharry said the find was a significant one
for the Daventry area.
He said: "This could be the largest cannabis factory found in the
Daventry area so far. The issue of cannabis factories is a national one
and we are disrupting more of them in Northamptonshire.
"There is no doubt that cannabis production on this scale is an
organised crime and I am grateful to the vigilant members of the public
who told us about their concerns."
